Fernando Martinez Column in SI

Walter Villa wrote a great column in SI profiling Fernando Martinez. At 19 years old, the Mets are really placing a lot of value on this player. Of course, I hope he lives up the great expectations that are being placed upon him by the organization.

On the decision not to trade Martinez to the Twins for Johan Santana:

But Tony Bernazard, the Mets’ Vice President of Development, is happy with the decision.

“We gave up a lot of talent,” Bernazard said with a bit of a nervous laugh. “But we didn’t include Fernando. And as an organization, we are happy with that.”

I’m not ready to pencil him into the 2009 lineup card yet. Baseball history is littered with “can’t miss” prospects that never make a significant contribution at the major league level. Remember Todd Van Poppel, the 14th overall pick in the 1990 amateur draft? Take a look at his career stats here.

About Dave Doyle

Although I don’t have a degree in journalism, I love writing about the New York Mets. I’m the typical writer without access. My only accessibility to the Mets is sitting in the stands (often the upper tank) and watching on TV like most fans. I’m not a member of the media, just a fan expressing opinions.
