Mets Fernando Martinez Top 30 Prospect

Fernando MartinezBaseball America lists Mets minor league outfielder Fernando Martinez at #30 in their list of top 100 prospects. They estimate that he’ll be in the majors in 2010 and that’s fine. He’s only 20 years old. But I have a feeling we’re going to see him in one of the corner outfield positions for some period of time this year. Whether it’s an injury or poor performance, I think Martinez will spend at least one month at the major league level this year.

I might have to make the trek to Triple-A Buffalo this summer to see Martinez play. That’s where I expect him to be for most of this season.

Although I don’t have a degree in journalism, I love writing about the New York Mets. I’m the typical writer without access. My only accessibility to the Mets is sitting in the stands (often the upper tank) and watching on TV like most fans. I’m not a member of the media, just a fan expressing opinions.

  1. I am not 100% sold on F-Mart (we need a better nickname for him). He has very quick hands and drives the ball all over the field. But if you look at video of him his swing is a little long and he gets a hitch soemtimes when he is trying to kill the ball… Wright does the same thing, but he is smart enough to realize it and make the correction… Martinez needs some seasoning and needs to shorten his swing just a bit to make it in the big leagues… He could be something special if he fixes that little hitch…
