Phillies 5 – Mets 4 June 10, 2009

The Mets ended up losing this one in 11 innings on a Chase Utleyhome run, his second of the game, off Bobby Parnell. But the good news is that Mike Pelfrey found his form and pitched a very good game. He went 6 innings giving up 4 runs (2 earned). If not for a costly error picking up a ground ball by David Wright, Pelfrey’s line would’ve been much better. A side note is that light-hitting Pelfrey was 2 for 3 with a double off the left field wall and an RBI.

The Mets consistently had opportunities offensively but left 16 runners on base. Compare that to the 5 LOB that the Phillies had. Wright and Omir Santos had 3 hits apiece leading the Mets offense.

The Mets and Phillies will play the rubber game of the series tonight at Citi Field.

My only accessibility to the Mets is sitting in the stands (often the upper tank) and watching on TV like most fans. I’m not a member of the media, just a fan expressing opinions.

  1. Very disappointing loss. Once again the Phillies made the plays, and the Mets didnt. Grit is still something the Phil’s still have over the Mets. Even though Pelfrey showed some with Utley.,
When it counted, Beltran did not make the play on a catchable ball, and Wright failed to make a play that would have saved the Mets two runs. On the other hand Werth made a spectacular high risk catch. I wont even talk about all the LOBs.

    1. I was really surprised that Beltran didn’t catch that ball near the wall in center field. He did have a nice catch earlier though sliding in right-center. But he usually makes that catch near the wall. That one easily could have been scored an error.

  2. 16 hits and only 4 runs… More costly errors, and more bad at bats with runners in scoring position… When will they learn that defense and timely hitting win championships!!!
