Poll: Optimistic Mets Fan

Following the releases of Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo, I’m really optimistic about the Mets turning into a team of players I like to watch every day. I’m curious to find out if anyone else has a sense of optimism about this team. I’m not delusional about the Mets chances to make the playoffs. They’re still the fourth best team in the division.

At this point my standards have been lowered so much that I can be satisfied with watching a team of players that I like and believe that the best baseball is in front of them. Take the poll below and let me know if you’re optimistic about this team’s future too.

Poll: Fans Choice for Mets GM

Jeff Wilpon sent an email to everyone subscribing to the Mets email list that they’ve cut their GM candidates down to two people. Josh Byrnes and Sandy Alderson are the two candidates left standing. Allard Baird, Rick Hahn, Dana Brown, and Logan White were informed that they’re out of the running.

I still can’t understand why Wilpon won’t wait for the Rangers season to end to speak with Jon Daniels. But it looks like the Mets are intent on making a decision this week.

I would like to know who your choice is for GM. Both guys have experience, although Alderson’s is much deeper. Do you prefer Byrnes, Alderson, or someone else? Answer the poll below.

Poll: Are the Mets in the 2010 Playoff Race?

July 22, 2010 - Los Angeles, California, United States of America - 22 July 2010: Mets general manager Omar Minaya prior to the New York Mets facing the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-5, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Omar Minaya thinks the Mets are still in the NL playoff hunt. Do you? That’s the question.

The reality is that they’re currently 10 games behind the Braves in the NL East and 7.5 games behind the Giants for the Wild Card. There are only 35 games left and there are six teams ahead of them for the Wild Card.

It would appear to require a miracle for the Mets to make the playoffs. I sure don’t think it’s happening. But Minaya thinks it might.

“Guys, we’re still in the hunt,” the GM said. “We’re seven games out of the wild card and we’re still in August. You want to win games.”

Vote in the poll below and let me know what you think.

Poll: Carlos Beltran Return from Injury in 2010?

After a 2009 season filled with injuries and disappointment, we were all ready to turn the page this season and move on. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do that. Carlos Beltran, arguably the Mets best position player, had “unauthorized” knee surgery in January and still hasn’t returned 17 weeks later.

Beltran was scheduled to be out for 12 weeks of recovery but still hasn’t begun baseball activities to get ready to play. There has been rumor and innuendo that Beltran is dogging his rehab in preparation for his walk year in 2011. Maybe that’s true, who knows?

The latest news is that he’ll be back in July, at the earliest. That raises questions that I’d like to hear from you about. When do you think he’ll be back? A poll is embedded below.

Poll: Johan Santana- Cause For Concern?

It was very disconcerting to see Johan Santana get crushed in Philly for 10 runs last night. The Mets ace having nothing against their biggest rival on national TV was a big surprise to me. I’m sure it was for you too.

This has to raise the question: are you concerned about this or was it a one-time event? Answer the poll below embedded in the post.

Poll: Mets 2010 Fifth Starter

As usual, one of the biggest position battles in Mets spring training is for the fifth starter. Although the fifth starter can be a conglomeration of garbage, I really like the options that the Mets have for this season. Last year, the battle was between Livan Hernandez and Freddy Garcia. What a mess that was! By the way, have you seen the video of drunk Freddy Garcia at this year’s SoxFest getting fans excited for the season? A sloppy, drunken, expletive-filled, aging fifth starter is sure to get the Chicago fans pumped about the season.

Poll Results: Mets 2010 Worst Contract

Oliver Perez 18 votes 58%
Omar Minaya 7 votes 23%
Carlos Beltran 3 votes 10%
Entire Team 1 vote 3%
Jerry Manuel 1 vote 3%
Luis Castillo 1 vote 3%

It’s not a huge surprise that Perez ran away with this poll. The faux knee injury last year and his “rehab” stint in the minors was a terrible omen for the rest of his 3-year/$36 million contract.

I have to say that I thought that Castillo would garner more votes. And Beltran is looking like he may be a waste of $18.5 million this year if he doesn’t come back healthy enough to make an impact this year.

You can see the original poll post and let me know in the comments here if you didn’t get a chance to vote. Who do you think is the biggest waste of money for the Mets this year?

Home Gold Selling Parties Gain In Popularity As Price Of Gold Remains High

The Mets have a few really bad contracts on the books right now. But I’m curious to find out who you think is the absolute worst. I have my own ideas about that. And I’ll go ahead and vote in this one too.

You can base this on any criteria that you like. It could be the worst production, too many injuries, too much money, a combination of them all. Whatever you like. Basically, I’d like to know who you think the Mets are throwing the most money away on.
