Report: Mets’ Johan Santana Out For 2011 Season

Johan Santana won’t be back to pitch in 2011 according to a report in The Record by Steve Popper and Bob Klapisch. The report states that Santana’s throwing sessions haven’t gone well and that the Mets are considering pulling the plug on his rehab and re-evaluating the work that he should be doing at this point.

Originally, Santana was supposed to be doing rehab from his left shoulder surgery last September with an eye towards return in early July. Santana himself even reiterated that timetable in a Feb. 17 radio interview with Mike Francesa of WFAN New York.

The Mets already thin starting rotation is pretty much in shambles without Santana coming back this season. Let’s face it, nobody wants to see Chris Capuano getting 30 starts this year and that’s the painful reality of today’s news.

You never know how a season is going to go for a team before it starts. I think most people are predicting the Mets finishing third or fourth in the NL East. And I believe that’s a fair assessment of the team and the division. Without Santana, the team’s best player and highest paid player not pitching at all in 2011 those predictions could be lowered. It’s going to be a sad state of affairs for this team going through the fourth year of a seven year contract without Santana pitching at all.

In addition, Mets ownership can’t be happy with the prospect of Santana’s $22.5 million salary going up in flames either, considering their financial situation. Presumably, the Mets have insurance for all or a portion of Santana’s salary in case of injury. But given this ownership group, I wouldn’t put it past them to be forced to swallow the whole salary because of a bad insurance policy.

Audio: Mets’ Alderson on WFAN

NEW YORK - OCTOBER 29: Sandy Alderson poses f...

Here’s the audio from Sandy Alderson’s first appearance with Mike Francesa. It’s a long audio clip, about 42 minutes. But Francesa does a good job of getting to the relevant points that you’d want to hear about.

Francesa, of course, talks to Alderson about the current roster and the medical situation. But he also gets into his Oakland days and gets a denial from Alderson that he knew about steroids on those teams.

I take from the audio that Alderson is an intelligent, well spoken guy and that inspires confidence that he’s got the brains to do a good job. You never know how things will work out but I’m hopeful.

You should definitely check out the audio here.

David Wright Radio Interview in the Studio

3rd Annual Do The Wright Thing To Benefit The David Wright Foundation

Several of the Mets were in town today for an event at Citi Field. David Wright made his way into the studio with Mike Francesa on WFAN. As you would expect, a lot of the interview is about the dismal 2009 season that the team had as a whole. But he also goes into great detail about his own strange offensive season without the power that he’s had in previous seasons.

The dimensions of Citi Field and the impact on Wright are an issue as well. Personally, I like watching the Mets in a heavily-slanted pitchers park. The new Yankee Stadium and Citizens Bank are a joke and I’d hate to have to watch the Mets in a stadium like that. So I don’t have a problem with some reduced offense.

They get into the topic of steroids. I like Wright’s take on it. He didn’t give the typical protective fellow player answer that I expected. His opinion on the matter sounded just like every other fan that I’ve talked to.

He debunks the rumors that changes are imminent in the starting rotation or coaching staff. Clearly, he isn’t happy with the way the team is playing but he doesn’t have his finger on the panic button yet.

Audio: 2009 Mets Roster And Coaches Interviews

John MaineWe’ve got a ton of audio for you here today from WFAN. Mike Francesa was at Tradition Field and he talked to many of the major players and coaches. Tomorrow he’s scheduled to talk to Ryan Church and David Wright which could get interesting. He’s had beefs with both of them. I’m sure the whole “Church dislikes New York” thing will be a major topic of their conversation.
