War of Words Continues with Phillies

Mark Hale of the Post reports that Jimmy Rollins and Billy Wagner are still jawing about the upcoming season series.

“That wasn’t a one-year thing,” Rollins said. “It’s still gonna ring true in 2008 and every year I’m with the Phillies. We’re going to win. It’s gonna come down to who wants it more, and we want to win more than the Mets do.”

Yesterday Wagner said, “He’s right. He’s right that they’re the team to beat. They’re excited they got to the playoffs. As far as do they want it more? It’s up to the guys in this clubhouse to prove him wrong. Obviously last year he was right and so far he’s been good at telling the future.”Last year Wagner had said the Phillies weren’t better than the Mets.

Clearly, the games against the Phillies are going to have special meaning this season. Both the Mets and Phillies have been talking about each other since Spring Training began. In Jimmy Rollins case, he’s been talking trash since last year. I really do think the intensity that’s building around this rivalry is going to bring some fireworks this year in the form of an argument or fight of some kind. Would you be surprised if Billy Wagner hit someone in his first appearance against Philadelphia?

My only accessibility to the Mets is sitting in the stands (often the upper tank) and watching on TV like most fans. I’m not a member of the media, just a fan expressing opinions.
